Childrens Mattress: Selecting Comfort and Longevity!
Don't Shop for the Cheapest Mattress Available!
Childrens MattressTwin beds are most common when shopping for a childs bedroom. Twin mattresses are used for bunkbeds and daybeds also. This is a very price sensitive category for shoppers. In my 12 plus years of selling mattresses, we would get 1-5 phone calls per day asking what is (the price) of your cheapest twin mattress. This can be quite problematic for retailers. If we sold the cheapest mattress we could find, customers get upset with the quality and lack of longevity. If our starting price was for a more quality mattress, we were told that we are way too expensive!
Selecting a Mattress: Comfort vs Pricing!
For example, our starting price is $199 for a mattress set, versus a competitor’s price of $129. Sure, the $129 set looks like a better buy. But, they are not the same inside! (See Mattress Pricing Guide) Our $199 set is not by any means a very comfortable mattress, but at least it was more durable and built better. Our next step in pricing at $299 has much more comfort.

Parents: Try the Mattress Yourself Before Buying!
Childrens Mattress
A good guide for buying a mattress for a child is for you, as a parent, to lie on the bed. Does the spring system have substance or does it give a lot when you lay on it. Is there enough foam for comfort? Kids can be uncomfortable without expressing it. Mattresses in the above price range have a 5 year prorated warranty. This does not guarantee comfort level for 5 years. (See Warranty Guide)

How to Make Your Childs Mattress More Comfortable!
If you have a child 2 years old, and you buy an inexpensive mattress, you will probably be buying another in 2 to 4 years. If you consider that your child will probably be with you until they are 18 years old, then you could be replacing a mattress 4 times. And an inexpensive mattress's comfort level goes downhill rapidly within the first year! Cheap mattresses can cost more in the long run!
Think more long Term
A more premium twin mattress will last longer and give more comfort for your child. A decent InnerSpring coil system and comfort level will start about $499 with a 10 year non-prorated warranty. A good memory twin mattress will start about $699 and could last a lot longer than 10 years without losing much comfort.
A line of reasoning that many people have for purchasing a cheaper mattress is that children will stain and ruin a mattress in a very short time. Why purchase a more expensive set? Today there are very good
mattress protectors
that will guarantee to prevent stains on a mattress for up to 10 years. These protectors fit on like a contoured sheet. They have a very comfortable terry cloth top with a breathable plastic underside. They can be washed to help keep a mattress fresh and sanitary. Other Considerations: If you do consider a more long term mattress, now would be the time to think about the size of mattress to purchase. If there is room for a larger mattress, you may want to go to a full or queen size. That would allow your child to grow into a mattress without having to replace it at a later time. Bottom Line:
Buying the least expensive mattress will cost you more money over the long term. Children and Teen mattresses should have comfort as well as support.
