Crib Mattress Cover: Shopping for Comfort and Style
Article By: Phoenix Delray
A good crib mattress cover serves a lot of purposes when it is used correctly, especially when one is used in a play yard or playpen. It seems to make perfect sense to use them (we wouldnt sleep on a mattress without a sheet), yet there are many parents that do not think about the benefits that their child could enjoy with one. The crib mattress covers are widely available, and they are also inexpensive so parents can have several of them ready to cover the crib mattress at a moments notice if needed.
Even though many parents might use standard bed linens in their portable play yards, it is not safe to have loose fitting sheets in a bed with a very young child. The sheets that are designed for play yards are much smaller than standard sheets and they fit safely and snugly over a play yard mattress. Loose fitting sheets have been linked to SIDS and suffocation, and the baby could possibly get tangled up in a sheet that is too big for him or her. The crib mattress cover that you use will be soft, comfortable for the child, and safe.
Having no sheet over the plastic mattress can not only be unsafe, but it can also be uncomfortable. The plastic, vinyl covered bottom of the play yard is not a breathable surface, and in humid or warm environments moisture can collect around the childs skin, causing an uncomfortable rash all over that delicate baby skin.
Play yards can be really hard to clean, and using the sheets also makes it easy to separate the baby from germs that may be hiding on them. The sheets are quickly and easily changed in the event of a leaky diaper or a spit up episode. Many of the sheets that are available will fit most standard portable playpens. And they are usually made of a nice, soft cotton poly blend or a Jersey knit material, which is ultra soothing for the baby.
A waterproof pad is easily used underneath the sheets as well, which makes clean up even easier for the busy parents of today. Using one of these pads without a sheet is almost impossible because it gets tossed and bunched up around the baby. This of course is not only unsafe but is also ineffective with the pad serving its purpose.
There are many different solid colors and patterns that they are available in, and the best part is that the play yard sheet can be stripped off of the mattress and tossed into the washing machine and the dryer. Traditional brick and mortar stores, shopping centers, and many online stores and auction sites carry a wide variety of the sheets, so parents can easily find a crib mattress cover in any color and style to fit their baby decor.
