Your Master Bedroom - How to Select a Comfortable Mattress.

When selecting a mattress for your Master Bedroom, you will have a array of choices! This page will give you a good step-by-step process for choosing a comfortable bed. You will understand the different type of mattresses available, and pricing levels. I recommend reading "Mattress Buying Guide Mattress Pricing"

How to Shop for Your Master Bedroom Mattress
Buying a mattress is personal choice. There is no “one perfect” mattress that can be recommended for everyone! It is not something that you should buy online. You are investing in your health and well being, typically for the next 8 to 10 years or longer. It is a myth that there is one “perfect” mattress out there for everyone!

To find the right mattress, be prepared to lie on beds! Bring your own pillow if you like. Dress comfortably. You goal is to find the most comfortable mattress for you. If you are married, shop together!

Where To Shop

Find a retailer in your area that has the largest selection of mattresses, preferably a sleep store. They must have at least three categories of mattresses:
  1. Innerspring
  2. Memory Foam (Visco)
  3. Latex

There should be a good selection within each category. This can be one stop shopping providing the store has enough selection! Mattress pricing is more standardized than most people think.

Typical Pricing For Each Category: Most people will find a good mattress in the following categories:

1. Premium Innerspring. Price Ranges: $599-$2599+

2. Memory Foam Mattress. Price Ranges: $1499-$4000+

3. Latex Mattress. Price Ranges: $1499-$4000+

Pricing above is typically Queen Size. King Size mattresses usually adds $300-$600 more than Queen pricing depending on the category.

Choosing A Mattress: Step by Step

Selecting a mattress is simply a matter of elimination! When you shop for a mattress, do this:

Step 1: Lay on the Following Categories of Mattress

Lay on a "mid price" Premium Innerspring mattress. (About 10 minutes)

Lay on a "mid price" Memory Foam Mattress. (About 10 minutes – This is very important, because Visco Mattress will feel very different than other mattress and you need to spend enough time to form an opinion.)

Lay on a "mid price" Latex Foam Mattress. (about 10 minutes)

You will be spending about 10 minutes evaluating the different “feels/comfort level” on each category of mattress. You’ll find that you can usually eliminate at least one category of mattresses. If you are still between two mattress types, let’s say latex and innerspring types, lay on each again. Think about the next 1, 2, 5, 10 years or more sleeping on the mattress you select! Think sleep comfort first, price second!

Step 2: Select a Mattress category!

If you chose for example: Memory Foam as the mattress type you like the best then:

  1. Lay on the mid price Memory Foam mattress again and focus on its feel.
  2. Next lay on the next price model up and down.
  3. Feel the difference between the price points.
  4. Remember; eliminate mattresses until you find the right one!
  5. Trust your judgment!
Step 3: Purchasing Your Mattress!

Once you choose your mattress, discuss the following details with your sales person:

  1. Understand your warranty (See Warranties)
  2. Payment Options: No Interest financing or possibly no sales tax are promotions to look for at many sleep shops.
  3. Delivery Options: Usually, there is free delivery, setup and old mattress removal offered.

  4. Time Frames: Most of the time, your mattress will be in stock. However if it isn’t, a time frame of usually 7 to 10 days is not unreasonable for delivery. After all, you did select the perfect mattress for you!

A Few More Tips for Shopping:

    1. Educate yourself before shopping. Know general mattress categories and price points.

    2. Do not confuse mattress firmness for support. Most mattresses in the above categories have plenty of support! The most common reason people are dissatisfied with their purchase is because they buy too firm of mattress! Remember comfort first!

    3. Do not shop strictly on pricing! This is another common reason for dissatisfaction with a mattress purchase. If your mattress is not comfortable, you will probably be shopping again within a year or two.

Bottom Line: Shopping from Store to Store.

This is usually more confusing than beneficial. Every store that sells mattresses is going to have a sale!

Mattresses will have a Retail Suggested Price (MSRP), and then marked down to a sales price! Especially innerspring mattresses. Manufacturers Model names can be different from store to store, but essentially built the same. Retailers’ markups are usually very constant from one store to the next.

Save time, gas and frustration by shopping where there is a good representation of the above mattress categories!
