Mattress Toppers, Visco, Latex, Memory Foam, Feather

Mattress toppers are made to go on an existing mattress to add comfort to a bed system. Also know as overlays, they come in many varieties. They come in latex, visco / memory foam or feather. Typical mattress toppers usually come in 1 to 4 inches thicknesses. Feather and down overlays can go up to about 5 inches.

People usually buy toppers to "fix" an uncomfortable mattress.

Is a Mattress Overlay Right For You?

Serta Memory Foam Topper

An overlay will add comfort to any mattress, but if you have an old mattress that is not supportive, you generally are not fixing the problem. This is a "band-aid" approach. You may have invest in a new mattress.

However, if your mattress isn't that old, and gives you good support, but is too firm, an overlay may be the answer. What type should get?

Mattress Topper Buying Tips! Memory Foam

The most popular overlays are the memory foam toppers.

These however can be the most difficult to choose from. They come in 1 to 4 inch thicknesses. The are also measured by weight (density) that ranges from 2.5 to 5.3 lbs per cubic foot. A 2.5 will have more air compared to 5.3 lb which will have move visco elastic foam cells.

Whats that mean to you?
Prices are more weighted to the foam density. The denser the foam, the longer they last. Prices can range for a queen overlay from $89 .00 to over $800.00. Of course, the thickness will effect pricing also, but density is the bigger factor. See Mattress Toppers: Memory Foam Guide
My Buying Suggestion Is:
Most people are usually satisfied within the range of a 3lb. density and 3 inch thickness. I suggest before you purchase, that you make sure you like the feel of memory foam. Go to a local sleep shop and lay on a memory foam mattress. See How to Shop Locally Guide!
A couple of other tips!
Foam overlays can be heavy and awkward to maneuver. I recommend one that is covered versus a raw foam which can literally "stick" to your mattress while putting it on.

Also, if you have a King Size bed, you may want to consider 2 twin extra long overlays. See Mattress Sizes and Dimensions

Latex Overlays Tips

Latex overlays are quite popular also! They have a more traditional feel than memory foam. They tend to sleep cooler than visco. See: Latex Benefits Guide

Soft or Firm: Your Choice!
Latex can be manufactured for a softer or firmer feel. They also come in 1 to 4 inch thicknesses. If you don't know if you would like latex or visco better, go to your local sleep shop and test the two types. See: Compare Foam Mattress Guide

When it comes to thickness, I again recommend the 3 inch overlay because, less than 3 inches, the foam compresses too much. You may still feel the undesirable aspects of your bed.

Bottom Line:

An overlay can add comfort to a "good mattress" but doesn't fix bad mattress. Be comfortable and sleep well!
