Mattress Warranties: Prorated, Non Prorated, Workmanship, Quality
Understanding Mattress Warranties!Warranty is a statement or an agreement by the retailer and/or mattress Manufacturer guaranteeing workmanship and quality of a mattress. There are two terms to understand:- Prorated
A pro-rated is normally for a period of time but it does not cover the full cost of either repair or replacement. Instead the pro-rated warranty just covers a portion of the repair costs and does not replace at all. It covers a smaller percentage as the product gets older.- Non Prorated:
Non Prorated guarantees cover workmanship of a mattress for 10 years. This means your mattress is warranted against manufacturing defects in workmanship and material.
Usually 3 Types of Warranties.
- 5 Year Pro Rated
Inexpensive mattresses with poor coil systems are in this category. - 10 Non Prorated Warranty
Premium innerspring mattresses have a 10 year non-prorated warranty. See Innerspring Mattress Guide - 20 Year Warranty (10 years Non Prorated & 10 Years are prorated)
Premium Foam (memory and latex) mattresses have a twenty year (10/10 year non-prorated/prorated) warranty. See Benefits of Foam Mattresses
Example of 10/10 Warranty If your mattress becomes defective due to workmanship within 11-20 years from date of purchase Your Mattress Company will replace the mattress at a pro-rated cost of use of 1/20 of the original purchase price per year from the year shown on the bill of sale, provided that the conditions outlined above are met.
"Warranties In The Real World"
Mattress warranties are usually only as good as the retailer who stands behind it. When purchasing a mattress, ask about the warranty and what is the procedure for a warranty claim.Mattress Warranties are based on workmanship, not comfort level. Generally InnerSpring Mattress with a 10 year Non Prorated warranty has to have 1 1/2 inch or more indentation to be an issue. Many customers want a body impression to be covered under warranty. EuroTop or Pillowtop mattresses can be more prone to body impressions. Usually PillowTop with good quality memory or latex foams reduces body impressions. If body impressions are a great concern, try a PillowSoft also known as a Plush. These are medium soft mattresses. Memory Foam Mattress 20 Year Warranty (10 years Non Prorated & the Last 10 Years are prorated)A warranty issue for memory foam is usually a failure to respond (come back) quickly. A Visco foam that takes more than 2.5 seconds and longer may be a warranty issue or may be an inexpensive memory foam mattress. Mattress Warranties are best when you buy locally!
