Memory Foam Mattress: Visco -Buying Tips - Adjustable Beds Systems

Comfortable Sleep

Beds Without Springs

Memory Foam mattresses have become very popular in the last 10 years. They are an alternative to innerspring systems. They consist of a top layer (or layers) of memory foam and a under core of high density comfort foam for support. This foam is also known as Visco Elastic. When shopping or researching mattresses, you'll soon learn that there are many different comfort levels, grades and quality of these mattresses. This guide will give you buying tips to selecting a quality sleep system.

Proven Durability- Buying Tip

These mattresses have been around long enough now to establish a good track record. A good Visco foam has a density of 5.3 lbs per cubic foot or higher. A high density memory foam keeps its shape and retains its elasticity for many years (at least ten years or longer). A poor foam has less density per cubic foot (more air) and loses their elasticity (comes back to shape more slowly when compressed).

There are different comfort levels and price points with memory foam beds, but generally have the same benefits.

Adjustable Bases

Memory Foam Mattress: Adjustable Beds Are Great!

Benefits of Visco

Mattress Posture
  1. Conforms to your body to give support and lessen pressure points. When laying on your side, for example, the heaviest parts of your body(shoulders and hips) sink deeper into the mattress. This keeps the spine more aligned, while you’ll feel less pressure points than an innerspring style mattress.
  2. Less tossing & turning at night due to reduced pressure points.
  3. Virtually little to no motion transfer with your sleeping partner due to the high density of the foam.
  4. Foam adapts to your body changes as you grow older as opposed to an innerspring system that makes your body conform to it.
  5. High quality viscoe foam mattress last longer than more traditional mattresses.
  6. Adjustable Bed Systems - Foam mattresses are virtually the best! (Either Latex or Memory foam)

  7. Types of Memory Foam Mattresses

3 Categories of foam for consideration:

    1. Foam that reacts to body temperature and weight.
    2. Foam that reacts to body weight.
    3. Memory foam that is layered with latex.

    TempurPedic Mattresses

TempurPedic mattresses are sensitive to Body Heat and Body Weight

I have been selling TempurPedic for about 10 years. We were one of the first dealers in the State of Utah. When we first put the TempurPedic on our floor, we didn’t know what to make of this mattress. It was the most different mattress ever! It took me time and customer feedback to grow confident in this new sleep system. We offered a 90 Day Sleep Trial and were surprised at the low rate of returns (about 3%) and the positive response from our customers. At that time, there was only one model of TempurPedic, "The Classic". Now they have more than 8 models.

This is not an endorsement for TempurPedic! But, when you are shopping for a new mattress, you must at least try the TempurPedic. My experience is: customers will usually either like it a lot or not like it(sometimes, it’s love/hate).

Be sure to lay on it for at least 10 minutes to form your opinion. The main difference in TempurPedic and most other Memory foam beds is: The TempurPedic is formulated to reactto your body’s temperature and your body’s weight. What happens then is that you get really embedded into the mattress. This is a support feature that is unique to any other mattress. This is either TempurPedic’s main draw or main drawback! It will be a comfort level that you will or won’t like! Again, I stress that you lay on the mattress for at least 10 minutes to get the feel!

These are the following are choices of TempurPedic Mattresses:

Advantage Bed, Symphony, Classic, Prima, Deluxe, Rhapsody, Celebrity, Allura, BellaSonna and The Grand

A note of interest! TempurPedic's is universally priced throughout the country. Dealer pricing is the same where ever you shop. However you may find better financing terms from one store to the next. See: Where to Shop Locally

    Another Choice: ComforPedic Mattresses

ComforPedic Memory Foam ComforPedic is another national brand of Visco Mattress lineup in which I am familiar with, (recently purchased by Simmons). These mattresses are formulated not to react to body temperature. The benefit to this that many appreciate is that you don’t get the “embedded feeling” and body movement is easier. Also ComforPedic has several models that incorporate layers of latex foam with Visco Foam that give it a unique feel.

If you don't care for the feel of TempurPedic, don't overlook ComforPedic's line up. There is a definable difference. Both are very good products with long term warranties!

    More About ComforPedic

    Local Mattress Companies

Foamex Sensus Memory Foam There are many regional independent mattress companies that “put together” mattresses of good quality. They buy in bulk good memory foam and latex foam from reputable companies and build a very comfortable bed. Foamex is a well known manufacturer of "Sensus" viscoe elastic foam that is non thermal sensitive. They also offer several other memory foam types.

Their pricing can be a little more competitive than the national brands, but I stress again, please don’t put price before your comfort! There are cheap visco mattresses available, but will not hold up or be as comfortable over time (Due to the lower foam density). Buyers beware!

How to Choose a Mattress that is Right for You!

As mentioned many times throughout this sight, you must lay onmattresses to determine what’s right for you. If you have determined that you like memory foam mattress rather than Latex or Innerspring mattresses, please follow the steps below:

    1. Lay on the TempurPedic Classic (it’s the mid price mattress in their lineup)
    2. If there is a competing lineup of visco mattresses with Latex layers, lay on the mattress that is competitively priced to the TempurPedic’s Classic.
    3. Spend at least 10 minutes on each style of bed, and then choose which brand feels more comfortable for you and your spouse.
    4. If TempurPedic is your choice, then lie on the different models of TempurPedic, or if you have chosen the competitive brand, try their other models in the lineup to select your mattress.
    5. Choose the one that fits your comfort level and price point.

Remember that you’ll probably have this mattress for the next 10 to 20 years! Choose the comfort level that feels best.

How To Make Your Current Mattress More Comfortable!

    Bottom Line:

In “my opinion”, if a Memory Visco Mattress is manufactured well, they are pretty much equal in benefits and you are basically choosing Comfort Level. Choosing within a lineup of a mattress brand, more expensive does not mean more benefits! You do not need to pick the most expensive mattress unless you feel it’s worth.

Also while trying mattresses, check out one with an adjustable base! It is the ultimate in sleep systems.
